ABOUT PROJECT STRENGTH OVER SILENCE
The Future Problem Solvers Club at San Juan Hills High School created Project Strength Over Silence, or S.O.S, in the effort to end the stigma surrounding mental health and raise suicide awareness. Due to the multiple suicides we experienced in our community, we felt the need to change the stigma through the use of education. Last year, we created an educational presentation that included the following topics: eating disorders, anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicide. To distinguish our project from other mental health projects, we honed in on the fine lines surrounding each mental health issue and specific actions a student can take if an individual is suffering. Throughout the school year, we presented our project to various middle and high schools in Orange County. Through our efforts, we hope to open up conversations between parents, teachers, and students about mental health in the hopes of preventing teen suiciding. During June, the Future Problem Solvers Club qualified for the the Future Problem Solving Program International competition in Wisconsin and we were awarded 1st place for our project. In an effort to further reduce the stigma, in 2019, Project Strength Over Silence also hosted a 4-hour event that promoted exercise as a healthy coping mechanism. |
